GIDEON PREISS
Gideon Preiss is a Melbourne-based pianist, composer, producer, engineer and mixer whose distinctive musical voice has shaped an eclectic body of work spanning independent music, film, theatre and Yiddish language.
As a founding member of the acclaimed Australian band Husky, Gideon has co-written, arranged and co-produced five critically acclaimed albums. Husky became the first Australian band signed to legendary Seattle label Sub Pop Records and toured extensively throughout Australia, Europe and North America. Their debut album Forever So received an ARIA Award nomination and established the group as one of Australia's most distinctive independent acts.
Alongside his work with Husky, Gideon has built a reputation as a sought-after producer, engineer and collaborator, working across a diverse range of musical genres. His solo release, The Lonely Hotelier, marked a return to his roots as a pianist and composer. Intimate, cinematic and deeply reflective, the album explores themes of longing, memory and quiet melancholy, inviting listeners into a dreamlike inner landscape where beauty and loss sit side by side.
Gideon's work as a composer extends beyond the recording studio into film and screen. He has scored documentaries, short films and multidisciplinary works, and is currently set to have his music leading the sonic landscape of two 2027 features and multiple documentaries.
A passionate advocate for the preservation and renewal of Jewish cultural traditions, Gideon is a founding member of both The Bashevis Singers and Di Farborgene Khalyastre ("The Hidden Group"), an internationally recognised multidisciplinary collective that reimagines Yiddish poetry, music and storytelling through contemporary performance, visual art and film.
Alongside this, Gideon is also a core member of the celebrated Melbourne ensemble Jazz Party, whose explosive blend of jazz and R&B, has earned a devoted cult following and appearances at many of Australia's leading festivals. He is widely regarded as one of the most in demand piano collaborators in Australia.
